Controls
Lutron, Somfy and the value of system fit.
A respected name is not a complete specification. The best platform is the one that fits the treatment, controls and long-term needs of the project.
Lutron and Somfy are both established names in automated shading, but they approach the market through different product families and control ecosystems. Treating the choice as a simple ranking overlooks the reason each project is different.
Lutron shading can be compelling when it forms part of a coordinated Lutron lighting and home-control design, particularly where precise movement, alignment and a unified user experience matter. Somfy offers a broad range of drives and control options used across many blind, curtain and specialist shading systems.
Start with the difficult windows.
The largest opening, the longest track, the skylight or the most heavily layered treatment will often determine the viable drive family. Check load, duty, speed, noise, fabric compatibility and physical space before extending the choice across simpler windows.
One project may reasonably use more than one motor platform. If it does, the control strategy should make that complexity invisible to the client while keeping commissioning and service responsibilities clear.

Integration is more than an interface.
Confirm what the control system can actually do: individual and group movement, presets, feedback, timed events, daylight response and fault diagnosis. Establish who supplies gateways or power equipment, who writes the control logic and who commissions the final movement.
Wireless control can simplify certain installations; wired communication may provide advantages on others. The decision should respond to the building fabric, network strategy, maintenance expectations and stage of construction rather than habit.
Serviceability belongs in the specification.
Availability of trained fabricators, installers and replacement components is as important as headline performance. Ask who will support the system after handover and whether a failed drive can be accessed without disturbing the interior.
Product ranges and technical requirements change. Final wiring, dimensions and compatibility should always be checked against current manufacturer documentation. Independent specification is valuable because it keeps the project brief—not a preferred catalogue—at the centre of the decision.
